Vocalist Linda Tillery, artistic director of the Cultural Heritage Choir, and Sam Edwards and Lyvonne Chrisman, founders of Friends of Negro Spirituals, discuss the African roots of the word "spiritual" and the vocal music traditions that led to -- and came out of -- the development of this quintessentially American vocal art form.

The program airs on Friday, May 31, from 10-11pm at 91.7 fm or www.kalw.org.

If you missed last week's show, it is available on demand via kalw's online music player throughout this week. Click here and scroll down to the VoiceBox link to access the latest broadcast.
